The case is solid brass, and the brass is thick enough to make you realize that this is a serious compass, not a 'tin toy'. The glass is beveled on the edge, which makes the straight-on view look as though there are two chapter rings on the dial. There aren't, the second one is just the first one viewed through the bevel. The cover fits perfectly: snug but not hard to remove. "
